Homepage change

Those of you who visit this site by the main URL, http://lgnewmedia.net, will have noticed a different layout to the homepage. Rather than jumping straight to the blog, I’ve installed a static home page, with the blog entries a mere mouseclick away. This is all part of WordPress’ inbuilt functionality.

I think this gives the site a more professional feel, and it emphasises the two other sites which provide the actual service benefit to people.

I’d appreciate any views on this!

LGNews

As I haven’t posted for a little while I thought I may as well mention the little site I was working on last wekk, LGNews.

It’s a WordPress installation that aggregates various news feeds. To be honest, I don’t like it too much, thogh much of the problem seems to be that a couple of the feeds are borken and don’t contain, as far as I can see, the correct date information, meaning they constantly appear at the top. Frustrating.

Updates

I’ve changed things around quite a bit on this blog, partly in an attempt to force myself to update it a little more often.

I’ve upgraded to the latest version of WordPress, 2.1, which does various things in a much nicer way for me, though readers don’t get a great deal more out of it. I’ve put a new theme in place to make the site look a bit nicer, and installed some quite cool plugins which add some extra functionality.

At some point I’ll do a post on setting up a WordPress blog, with information on what all of this stuff does.

I have killed LGKnowledge for now – the open source project behind the platform I was using seems to have stalled. I’ll keep my eye on it, because I think this could be a really useful tool in the future, once the spamming problems are sorted out.

In the interests of saving diskspace, I’ve also deleted the forum on here. I was never going to have the time to really make it work well, and there is never anything more depressing on a site than to see a forum with no posts in it! So, I will concentrate my efforts on this blog and LGSearch. I’ll keep the wiki in place as it’s a useful way of storing documentation.

Need a Web 2.0 Name?

The Web 2.0 Company Name Generator is a cool and amusing little site. As the site says:

Need a name for your Web 2.0 company? Try this handy name generator.

Here’s some that I got:

Zoomworks
Buzzfish
Flashdog
Thoughttune
Quambee
Flashcat
Npath
Skamba
Chatterpulse
Quimia

That last one is just filthy.
Anyhow, once you have your name, don’t forget to head over to ImageTool.NET to sort out your Web 2.0 logo…

Link posts

Since the death of the previous blog, I cancelled the regular posting of my daily del.icio.us links.

When I set it up I thought it would be an interesting reminder for me of the stuff I thought was worth reading, and some bits might be useful for those that read this site. I was conscious, though, that a lot of the time those posts came up one after the other as original content is a little hard to come by sometimes.

So, what do we think? Should I bring them back? Or would a discreet link to my del.icio.us page on the sidebar be sufficient?
